All About The Neck

Are you forgetting something in the ongoing quest for healthy, younger-looking skin?  The neck!  We worry about loss of firmness, sagging and lines on the neck only after the signs of aging appear.  It’s natural for wrinkles to appear in the neck region due to the loss of collagen and connective tissue that holds this area tight. It used to be a concern area for mature women; however, this has broadened to the younger demographic due to texting & technology.  Text/tech neck is continuously looking down at our cell phones and laptops/iPads for many hours a day. The constant looking down motion causes the skin to crease, increasing wrinkles and breaking down collagen.

In 2020, Google searches for the term "How to firm neck skin?" increased by a stunning 120%.1  Results promote expensive procedures, more invasive procedures like surgical lifts, which come with a real risk of complications, downtime, scars and fear.  

The skin on the neck and chest area is much thinner and lacks the muscle mass that the face contains; therefore, it can be much more challenging to treat as a whole, since it ages differently than the face. There are several reasons for this, both intrinsic and extrinsic.

Intrinsic aging is the natural process of skin aging due to internal influences. While we can’t entirely stop intrinsic aging, we can target the physical age signs that appear on the neck and chest. This process is largely hereditary and varies from person to person, but boils down to four main factors:

  • Dermal collagen decreases 
  • Melanin production decreases 
  • Hair follicles and sebaceous glands decrease 
  • Cell turnover rate slows 

Extrinsic aging of the neck and chest is caused by external factors such as climate, pollution, diet, medication and lifestyle.   

The signs include: 

  • Brown pigmented spots
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Dry skin
  • Deep wrinkles
  • Creases often seen on the neck and chest.

Look for products with ingredients such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Retinol; formulated in creams and serums with peptides, ceramides or antioxidants.  My go to products (not just for the neck) are Vitamin A Plus & Vitamin C Plus.

In between facials it is imperative that you use the right skincare products daily and create a skincare routine to maintain healthy, smooth skin. My routine consists of using a Gua Sha or microneedle with iS Clinicals Youth Body Serum before bed.

My customized Firm + Lift treatment is the perfect add-on to any treatment.  It utilizes a combination of modalities, which may include Microcurrent, Ultrasound, LED, Cryotherapy or Microneedling.
